Journal Receptions
UVA Law’s student-run journals held receptions throughout the past week to aid 1Ls as they decided which journal to join. I shall speak to the two receptions that I attended: the Journal of Law and Politics (“JLP”) and the Virginia Journal of Law and Technology (“VJOLT”).
The JLP reception was located at Kardinal Hall, a measly 2.5-mile drive from the Law School. My friends and I left at 5 p.m., hoping to arrive around 5:10, stay for about 35 minutes, and then head back so we could make our 6 pm LRW clerking shifts. Little did we know, Charlottesville’s traffic at that time is absolutely horrific. To be fair, we may not have budgeted for the hajj to the back of the far parking lot. By 5:15, we hadn’t even come close to the main intersection in front of the Law School. I’d never seen such a rush to leave. Alas, the traffic continued the entire way there. It felt like there was a backup of cars leading to the venue. I may or may not have subjected my friends to a passionate rant on how the stop lights on Barracks Rd./Rugby Rd./Preston Ave. need to be motion-sensored. Not only did we catch every single red light, but we waited there each time as not one car turned. The fury. We arrived fashionably late at 5:35, ate the light bites, and promptly left, enraged at the thought of being in the traffic the whole way back. If you saw me walk in, stuff my face with fries and soggy nachos, and leave three minutes later, no you didn’t.
The next day was the VJOLT reception, located in the 1950’s Dining Room in the back of ScoCo. Much different experience from the day before. I casually strolled in around 5:30 p.m. and found a fully-stocked Chipotle buffet awaiting me. I loaded up and sat at one of the two tables with peeps. We discussed the journal, undergrad, Libel, 1L, reality TV, yada yada. Unlike most of the free food at this school, I was able to go up for seconds! Overall, pretty solid.
My apologies for this being about anything but the actual journals, and mostly about food. But what’s journalism without a fresh angle?
